This Old Advert: Rolo
Jul 16th
I loved this advert when I was little. The narrators voice sounds so old-school now.
The two pencil people are drawn onto our screens, followed by some scenery and hopefully a bunch of flowers. The girl offers the guy her last rolo, because she utterly adores him.
Now If that’s not true, chocolate-coated love, then I don’t know.
I think about current adverts with extravagant budgets to accommodate special effects, fast cars, famous spokespeople, faster planes and crazy stunts for products like deoderant and razor blades (because when you shave , you need to pretend you’re in a jet).
They’re all a blur though and I can’t really remember any of them. Yet I can remember this simple rolo advert from years ago.
Sometimes simple hits the mark better than O.T.T ever could.
So do you love anyone enough to give them your last rolo?
Ps This girlfriend makes me look bad …I don’t give away my last rolo.. sorry they’re just too yummy.
This Old Advert: IBM

Backstage a few weeks ago, I was trying to remember this advert. I kept telling the cast that there were elephants and they were friends and brothers and they were crossing the desert.
I got some pretty skeptical looks …. no one knew what I was rattling on about.
I finally found it !
It’s an old IBM advert. I think it’s the song that does it and I mean who doesn’t love ellies?

PG Tips has been voted the nations favourite cuppa in Britain. Given Britain’s obsession with tea, that’s quite something. I think their adverts are largely responsible. One of the recnt ones features a knitted chimp and I love it so much that it almost made me switch from morning coffee to tea… almost.
Because let’s face it … who doesn’t want to start their day with a monkey who is partial to a bit of cabaret.
It’s brillint : kick start your day with the ad .. never mind the tea!
I also found one of their adverts from 1971 featuring a host of real chimps. If you’re feeling nostalgic, give it a watch . I laughed quite a bit.
It seems they’ve kept their brand humour pretty consistent across the years. Almost a 40 year gap between both ads and they still feel the same… a brand that has kept up with change but not forgotten who they are.
It’s the Taste!
Print Rocks My World

I love clever, funny Print ads. Even more than I love tee-shirts and French Bulldogs… which is a lot. I have a big book of Europe’s Best Print campaigns for the 07/08 year.
Every now and again I get the book out and page through it.
I could spend hours in this world of creative intelligence.

BP Adverts: Unite The Nation
Jun 17th
I came across these yesterday.
Since BP has been pumping oil into the ocean at a furious rate and dealing with a PR nightmare far worse than anything Janet Jackson could’ve worn ( or not worn), people have forgotten that they are in fact an official sponsor of the 2010 World Cup. Pity they went and made this mess, as these ads have been severely overshadowed.
Their Unite The Nation adverts are aimed at South African soccer fans and depict several unlikely teams facing off against one another. They have won several awards and I think they’re brilliant, especially the banners of support for Team Car Guard.
Well done Ogilvy SA.

Kulula Helps Dry Our Eyes

South Africa definitely has a unique sense of humour! Hosting the World Cup, discovering Gees and dealing with FIFA’s rules, regulations and ridiculousness left agencies ample opportunities to come up with hilarious ads.
Kulula has been quick to capitalise, especially handing out tissues to heartbroken Bafana supporters on their flights, following Bafana’s defeat 3-0 against Uruguay last night. I was at the Waterfront and after that first goal from Forlan, a deathly hush fell over the entire venue. In fact, I still have not heard a Vuvuzela today.

Kulula are not Negative Nancys, they were prepared for both outcomes. There is also a pack for when Bafana win,to wipe away the Tears of Joy. Let’s hope that pack appears on flights after Bafana’s clash against France on 22 June.
