Kulula Helps Dry Our Eyes

Jun 17th

South Africa definitely has a unique sense of humour! Hosting the World Cup, discovering Gees and dealing with FIFA’s rules, regulations and ridiculousness left agencies ample opportunities to come up with hilarious ads.

Kulula has been quick to capitalise, especially handing out tissues to heartbroken Bafana supporters on their flights, following Bafana’s defeat 3-0 against Uruguay last night. I was at the Waterfront and after that first goal from Forlan, a deathly hush fell over the entire venue. In fact, I still have not heard a Vuvuzela today.

Kulula are not Negative Nancys, they were prepared for both outcomes. There is also a pack for when Bafana win,to wipe away the Tears of Joy. Let’s hope that pack appears on flights after Bafana’s clash against France on 22 June.

Vuvuzela: I Vote Stay

Jun 14th

To be honest I didn’t even know what a vuvuzela was until a few months ago and now suddenly every other street corner in South Africa is equipped with it’s own flag, smiling local and of course a trumpeting Vuvuzela.

It’s even trending on Twitter.

I love this passionate display of patriotism that is rocking our country.

Trust me I was one of the last to be convinced about FIFA and the World Cup.FIFIA hijacking South Africa was and still is annoying me, but I am really overwhelmed by the positive spirit surging through South Africans.

I hope this Proudly South African , we’re going to show the world attitude is going to stick.

There is tons of controversy surrounding the plastic horn ( whose origins are disputed) but I want it to stay. Sure it’s noisy, but that didn’t stop Germany kicking off their World Cup campaign with a stunning 4 goal win against Australia did it? So certain European teams might want to rethink using it as a convenient scapegoat ( cough cough France).

The British Media has been far less than complimentary in their coverage about South Africa in the run up to the World Cup ( their SA correspondent is a twit) problems with the official ball, the pitches being too level, the vuvuzelas … in fact according to them we have done little right. There was even talk of Germany coming to our rescue and hosting it there, as poor South Africa was sure to fail.

So hearing dear Eamonn and his crew moaning about the Vuvuzelas this morning made me want to wrap a few up and send them straight to the Sky News studio with fondest love and compliments.

Because I sat in a venue and watched the opening game with South Africans I didn’t know, sang our anthem with them, cried with them, was moved, celebrated madly when Tshabalala scored and drove home thinking wouldn’t it be awesome if we surprise the world and make it through? And I did all of this to the soundtrack of vuvuzelas.. even on the drive home kids were lining the streets with painted faces, smiling and blowing them at passing cars.

I know I wasn’t the only South African to have a moment like this.

South Africans needed a little hope in their lives. So if it takes a month of listening to a couple of noisy horns to bring our country together, then they’re welcome to stay.

Frankly I would also much rather hear the Vuvuzelas than the charming slurs and abuse that some English fans come up with … against their own players. We can do without idiots wishing that players kids get cancer, thanks. Here in Africa, we have hearts.

Germany gave the World military precision and impressive football.

South Africa is giving the World an experience and smiling faces.

I know which of the two I would rather have, do you?

As BBC sports commentator Farayi Mungazi stated in defense of the Vuvuzela ” There is no point in taking the World Cup to Africa and then trying to give it a European feel.”

I really wish you were all here to feel the Pride, Love, Patriotism and the Hope.

Ps Thanks To Angel Campey for the pic of the Madly Patriotic Car

Our proudly South African Bafana World Cup squad was announced on 01 June 2010. Admittedly and rather shockingly I know very little about our Soccer squad.

Don’t panic if you’re also a few players short of a full Bafana, you’ve come to the right place.

Steven Pienaar

Born 17th March , 1982 this Jozi local is currently playing for Everton in  the English Premier League.

One of the stars of Bafana, the country is expecting awesome things from this young man.

He made his international debut against Turkey and in 2010 was awarded Evertons Player of the Season.

Teko Modise

Born 22nd December, 1982 in Soweto, Modise currently plays for Orlando Pirates. He is currently the ambassador for McDonalds, Coca-Cola, Nike, Samsung and Telkom.

He made his first appearance with the Bafana squad against Malawi and he supported Kaizer Chiefs as a youngster.

Siphiwe Tshabalala

Scoring the first goal of the 2010 World Cup, in the opening match against Mexico, Tshabalala is a local hero!

South Africa shook when an entire nation screamed in celebration when the ball left his foot to find it’s way past the keeper and straight to the back of the net!

Born 25th September 1984, Tshabalala grew up in Soweto and currently plays for Kaizer Chiefs.

He made his international debut in a friendly against Egypt in 2006.

Reneilwe Letsholonyane

Born 9th June 1982, like a lot of the mid-field Letsholonyane hails from Soweto.

Nicknamed YeYe, he has played for South Africa since 2008 and scored his first international goal in a recent match against Guatemala.

He currently plays for Kaizer Chiefs.

Thanduyise Khuboni

Born 22nd May, 1986 this  Durban footballer currently plays for Golden Arrows . This defensive midfielder grew up in the Clermont township.

Kagisho Dikgaco

Born 24th November, 1984 Dikgaco currently plays for Everton in the English Premier League. Quite a distance from his hometown of Brandfort.

He made his debut for Everton in 2009, but was sent off in the 41st minute for slapping Scott Parker. ( I laughed at this ! ).

He made his international debut against Mauritius.

Macbeth Sibaya

Out damned French! Out I say ! ;)

Sibaya was born 25th November 1977 in Durban . He currently plays for FC Rubin Kazan in Russia ( Brrrrr! )

Before heading off to Europe he played for Jomo Cosmos.

He has 52 caps for Bafana and was part of the 2002 FIFIA World Cup squad.

Surprise Moriri

See it’s true what they’re saying, Bafana is full of surprises in the 2010 World Cup ;) !

Born 20th March 1980, Moriri grew up in Mpumalanga and currently plays for Mamelodi Sundowns.

He made his international debut against Lesotho in 2003.

He scored his first goal for Bafana against Chad in 2007.

Lance Davids

Born 11th April 1985 Davids  has recently signed to play for Lierse S.K in Belgium.

Davids grew up in  Mitchell’s Plain, Cape Town and made his debut for South Africa in 2004.

Since then he has made 23 appearances for the national side.

We know you’ll give the guys up front some valuable support.
We’ll be supporting from the games, couches, clubs, street corners and side mirrors :D

Our proudly South African,  Bafana Bafana World Cup squad was announced on 01 June 2010. Admittedly and rather shockingly I know very little about our Soccer Stars.

Katlego Mphela

Mphela made his international debut as part of the Maurituis squad in February 2005. He has represented South Africa 30 times and scored 14 goals.

He was leagues top goal scorer in the 2009-2010 season.

Bernard Parker

Our proudly South African, Bafana Bafana World Cup squad was announced on 01 June 2010. Admittedly and rather shockingly I know very little about our Soccer Stars. I know that our strip is yellowy Green, that people are really upset that Benni got left out in the cold and that one of them is the face of every LG ad … but other than that .

I am fresh out.

Don’t panic if you’re also a few players short of a full Bafana, you’ve come to the right place.

Itumeleng Khune

Born 20 June 1987 in Ventersdorp, Khune is a fantabulous goalkeeper!

He currently protects the nets of Kaizer Chiefs and of course Bafana. He made his international debut against Zimbabwe on March 11, 2008

If he gets bored of soccer… he can always take up ballet ;)

Moeneeb Josephs

Born 19th May 1980, Josephs hails from Cape Town .

He currently plays for Orlando Pirates and is nicknamed Slim Kat. He made his debut at the age of 17 in 1997, playing for the Cape Town Spurs.

I like his “Game Face!”

Lets hope it scares the pants off Mexico in the opening game!

Shu-Aib Walters

Born December 6th 1981, this Cape Town keeper usually spends his time in the Maritzburg United goals.

Soccer Moment: His spectacular save he pulled against Orlando Pirates striker Siphelele Mthembu at the Harry Gwala Stadium.

He made his Premier Soccer League debut in 2006. He looks like he can throw pretty far.

Good Luck Boys
We know you’ll make some super saves.

I wandered into this box at Constantia Village today.

This rather empty box, which contains a YOU magazine, is part of the Grow Smart project. Grow Smart is trying to spread awareness for the importance of literacy in the Western Cape.

I don’t know about you but I dont think the YOU magazine is really the best we can do for our leaders of tomorrow! If it is … um…eeeek!

So from one bookworm to another, please pop by and drop your new/used childrens books into the box. You’ll find the box outside Woolworths.

Help fill the box and help enrich young minds :D

Mr World … Cup

The other night I ended up at the Dubliner (cool spot with cool band) on Long Street with two of my girlfriends. Like everywhere else in Cape Town, World Cup 2010 fever has hit Long Street with a furious passion and brought with it a host of intriguing visitors and strangely placed soccer balls.

So it’s around 10.30pm. We’re 3 girls sitting alone at a table, mid-way through a deep conversation about why some Men should have stayed on Mars when Mr England approaches.

Now we don’t want to be rude: MTN, Telkom and Mr Z keep telling us not to be. We’re playing host to the world after all.

Mr England:

He sat down under the guise of needing relationship advice for his poor friend that he was very worried about. We fell hook, line and sinker and gave him the advice within 15 mins. 1 hour and 30 mins later he was still chatting to us. Mr England moaned about local transport, Clique-y Cape Town and everything being so far away. Still smarting from our loss in the T20WC I briefly got chatting about cricket but eventually Mr England went home.

Mr New Zealand:

He sidled up to our table in a cool, sort of mysterious way, in a suave sort of trench coat. He sat down and asked if he could sit here whilst he hid from several people. We asked him to elaborate and he replied with… yeah you know how it gets.  A few minutes later, he left. International Kiwi of Mystery that one.

Mr Brazil:

He came up to me whilst my two friends were at the bar. Hallo he said. I Brazil . You alone ?  Hope Cape Town girls aren’t holding out for the stellar conversation skills of Brazilian guys… they may be disappointed.

Team America:

These guys were cute, in that little kid whose cheeks you want to pinch kind of way. 18 and 22 and from North Carolina ans Texas respectively. They shuffled up to our table and asked if they could sit there. Apparently the last table of girls had told them to F off. They marvelled at our cheap cabs, how we said water and the garden route.

Like most Americans in Cape Town, they were volunteering here, to help save Africa. They had certainly kept the Dubliner out of the red.

Mr Netherlands:

He danced through the doors. Hugged me . Happily shouted a lot of things in Dutch and then grooved onto the dance floor and we never saw him again.

Mr Russia:

We met Mr Russia outside. He sat down at our table, asked my friend her name and then proceeded to whisper sweet, Russian nothings to her across the table. Mid woo he was interrupted by a lady behind him. He turned round to her, put his arm around her, turned back to us, grinned and said in the Smirnoff voice ” This is my ladiezzz.”  His Ladiezzz took Mr Russia away.

Mr Venezuela:

I never got to speak to him but I did see him. We all know Venezuela is famed for it’s Beauty Pageant Queens… but the world has clearly been overlooking Venezuela’s share of equally gorgeous guys. Some of whom happen to be in the Mother City.. in burger joints on Long Street.

My vote goes to Mr New Zealand. Just for being completely random and wearing a very hot coat.

It was hysterically surreal meeting all the real-life versions of the flags that are currently strung up around every store. There are some complete oddballs on our shores at the moment :D

So get to Long Street, be a good host and trust me you’ll be entertained by a crazy, cosmopolitan cast !

Weekend: Winter: FIFA: Global Mug

I don’t know about you, but this week has taken forever.

Winter is properly here, rain is lashing the windows, the sky looks upset and there’s even snow! SNOW!

Sho-wee those foreign, football teams are going to be mighty chilly! We had best donate some blankets, hot chocolate and fluffy slippers, in case FIFA treated the Cape winter like their ticketing servers. They just didn’t think.

Wait.. can I say snow, FIFA and football all in one post?

Hmmm I better not mention the Global Mug or we’ll be in real trouble ;)

Good news is that there are enough lolCatz to laugh us through winter and back to the summer sunshine :D

Whatever you’re doing this nippy weekend, enjoy it, you deserve it!

PS This cat reminds me of the Parlotones for some reason.
