Posted in Local Is Seksy

Attended opening night with The Drama King. Secretly was thrilled to finally have a reason to wear my beautiful coat ( yes surprisingly sometimes I am a proper girl ).

I’m definitely a fan of Mr Andrew Lloyd Webber but didn’t know much about this musical. I was also slightly apprehensive as I wasn’t sure whether I should be preparing myself for 2 hours of religious propaganda. These worries increased when I saw a religious group handing out pamphlets at the foot of the Artscape stairs.

I shouldn’t have worried though . I mean it’s Lloyd Webber and Rice!

The plot focuses on the struggles between Judas and Jesus. In this version of events, Judas, who doesn’t entirely agree with the direction Jesus is taking, get’s a lot of attention.

It’s a great musical, it makes sense and it gives you food for thought. I left reflecting that it’s actually awful how we create stars, elevate them to godlike status and then standby as they’re crucified by the media.

The vocal control from both Jesus (Cito) and Mary (Nadine) was phenomenal. Please, if you only appreciate one thing in this production; let it be that. The guitar was great, the characters were rich and the chorus was strong.

They were all good actors- wooohooooo. Please appreciate.

The lighting was awesome. The cross was superb. The combination of the two causes the final moments to be properly chilling.

Promise.

I’d recommend it in a heartbeat. It lives up to all of the high (very high) expectations that the 2006 production set.

Don’t believe me? Well the audience began standing as soon as the curtain call started.

On at the Artscape until the 28th May.

Go see it.

Posted in Local Is Seksy

Show honor now, show them a stony heart and sink them with it!

-John Procter

I headed to the Masque Theatre in Muizenberg for the opening night of The Crucible.

It was an intense production and definitely not a chilled affair. I was on the edge of my seat, jumping into my friends lap or jumping out of my skin for most of it. It was unexpected from the usual Masque repertoire and I loved that!

It really is good though.

And I mean, who isn’t morbidly curious about the 1692 witch trials in the little, religious town of Salem? You really do get sucked in. And I found myself pretty immersed in the trial proceedings. Tension was built beautifully and some great drama was played out on stage.

I really don’t want to spoil it for you though. I went in knowing absolutely nothing about this play. Which was kind of cool. You’re always surprised and the play doesn’t have to work to combat your expectations. You also don’t know how it’s all going to end.

It’s a large cast, filled with strong, talented and rich performances. The most memorable for me came from Dean Howarth, Richard Higgs’ , Isabel Byers , Tamara Richards, Angela Lee-Wright and Jonathan Duguid.

A really challenging piece. Kudos to all involved!

It Is:

Tense. Wordy. Nail-biting. Requires you to think. Smart Audience preferred. Full of suspense

It isn’t:

Happy. Boring. Relaxing.

Jonathan Duguid,Faeron Wheeler, Dean Howarth, Angela Lee-Wright

The Important Bits:

I know.

Because I went last year…Schalk’s actually a pretty decent bowler.

Back to the point.

Newlands. It’s really beautiful.

I mean who actually goes there to watch the cricket?

Clearly none of these people.

And even though I got my phone, clothes and most of my legs covered in someone else’s beer.

Even though I pursued an ice cream man around the stands, paid for my ice-cream, experienced euphoric happiness about achieving my goal… which then abruptly ended when I opened the world’s most expensive Cornetto and found it broken.

Distressing.

I still ate it.

I just ended up with most of it on my face.

Don’t worry. I know. I’m just dripping in sophistication right now. And ice cream. And sunblock. Oh and beer. In fact. I’m so sophisticated right now, I don’t quite know what to do with myself.

Even though I waited in the bathroom queue for 2.235 zillion years, 4 months and 2 minutes ( Life Advice: If you’re going to exaggerate; exaggerate precisely).

I really do believe that in the interests of

1.) Contributing to global efficiency and

2.) Ensuring that Robs DOESN’T miss awesome wickets.

Female bathrooms need a fast lane, a slow lane and SOME people should be fined.

Even though I lost my flag ( I found it again. Or someone else’s… I can’t be sure), watched the Proteas lose. And then had salt rubbed in the wound by a very happy, dancing man from India.

I still had a great time.

Thanks for the reminder Newlands.

I’d forgotten just how fun you are.

What I Thought:

Let me just say that even though I haven’t seen many productions at the Masque; this is without a doubt the best I have ever seen. I am literally going to gush for several paragraphs as to how beautiful, polished and just plain gorgeous it all was. The set was breathtaking, the costumes amazing and the attention to detail was immaculate. There was nothing on that stage that had been overlooked.

Performances were outstanding, the women elegant and the men handsome. Holland was stunning as Lady Windermere and the scenes with Mrs Erlynne (Belknap) were incredibly touching. I can’t run through everyone because we would be here forever but they were all so well cast. The Duchess of Berwick ( Cohen) and her terribly, talkative daughter (Willows) were definite highlights as was the scene with Lords Windermere, Darlington, August Lorton, Mr Dumby and Mr Cecil Graham discussing good women.

Also got to hear one of my favourite lines We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking up at the stars.

Everyone added to this production and you know what? My gushing is not even doing it justice, so do yourselves a favour and go see it I am so proud of and happy for this cast. Their curtain call brought a full house to it’s feet and deservedly so.

Can I just say that I am really proud of how Cape Town shone during the World Cup.

The people, the places, the games, the crowds, the mad fans, the rife patriotism. Everything. We had some hiccups but we handled them and best of all we were the city that saw Uruguay depart

I was given this little CT heart at the airport before I left on holiday. Departures was packed with tourists draped in all sorts of SA attire . Flags and wigs and arm sleeves and yellow tee shirts and of course Vuvuzelas!
I felt happy that so many pieces of our country were winging their way across the world.

You can get your own little heart at the Tourism store at the entrance to departures terminal. So if you’re flying anytime soon, you should get one

But back to the point !

Even our wildlife is feeling the Gees Triton is one of the resident White lions at Jozi Zoo and he loves playing soccer.

Hmmm maybe Bafana can use him… I mean who didn’t want to see Saurez ( the Uruguay number 9 who has a strong magnetic attraction to the ground) get chomped

Triton should be the unofficial, official mascot of the you know what.

He beats the Ayoba man and that spotty, green haired leopard hands down.

PS This is the only time Derek Watts will appear on this blog

PPS … you can so tell I have had 2 cups of coffee. Look at all the deranged smiley faces in this post.
