Lunch Spot: My Basaar on Loop

Written by , Posted in Review: Places, Things and Experiences

Now, I work in an office that is 88% male and it’s safe to say that lunch is a pretty big event.  We start to talk about our lunch plans round about 11. And then like Pavlov’s dogs, we hear that canon go off at 12, and 5 minutes later we’re wiping the drool from our keyboards and imagining what culinary delights the next hour could hold.

And at 12.10, half of us are usually standing in front of My Basaar [unless it's Fish and Chip Friday] and eyeing up their menu board. My Basaar is a beautiful, little place that has recently arrived on the corner of Riebeck and Loop. It’s an unexpected and welcome surprise.

They serve tasty, nutritious goodness for Breakfast, Lunch and Takeaway Dinners. They have chalkboards with personality. And make the best soup known to mankind.

The owner is lovely, the staff are always friendly and helpful and the decor is like I’ve died and walked into Pinterest.

The signs, the jars full of sweets, the blue bunting [making a comeback], the table settings, the bell jars, the chandeliers and the proteas. The attention to detail is incredible and evident in their packaging, the interior and their delicious food.

I ‘ve yet to have a meal disappoint and I’m a big fan of their soups [as you may have gathered way up there.] This is mostly because the soup is not only tasty, but is accompanied by a box of bread, bree and caramalised onion. The bree is often wrapped with red and white twine and frankly this alone is worth the R60.

Other office favourites include the venison pie and salad, as well as the rump steak roll.
